  3. Troubleshoot the hardware issue
The screenshots in this post are captured from a Windows 11 operating system. If you are using Windows 10 or older versions, be aware that the visual appearance of your screen may vary slightly, but the steps to perform the task remain consistent.

Fix 1: Enable the Touchpad service for your laptop

If the Touchpad is disabled, your laptop Touchpad stops working. So you can check and enable the Touchpad on your laptop to fix it. There are two ways to enable Touchpad in your HP laptop:

Way 1: Check the dot at the upper left corner

There is generally a dot at the upper left corner of the Touchpad pane, so you can double-tap the dot on the upper left to enable the HP Touchpad.

Way 2: Enable the Touchpad in Settings

You can go to the Mouse settings in your laptop to enable the Touchpad:

1) On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key and X at the same time.

2) Click Settings in the popup menu.

3) Click Bluetooth & Devices and select Mouse (or Mouse & touchpad).

4) Then click Additional mouse settings.

5) Select the Touchpad tab (or Hardware tab or Device settings tab), and make sure your Touchpad is enabled.

6) Reboot your laptop and try your Touchpad.

Fix 2: Update the Touchpad driver

The missing or outdated Touchpad driver can cause your laptop touchpad not working issue, so you can update your Touchpad driver to fix the issue.

There are two ways to update the Touchpad driver: manually and automatically.

Manually update the Touchpad driver – You can update the touchpad driver by searching for the driver from the manufacturer, then download and install the driver  into your computer. Ensure to download the driver that is compatible with your Windows OS. This requires time and computer skills.

Automatically update the Touchpad driver – If you are not familiar with playing around with drivers, you can do it automatically with Driver Easy.

Driver Easy will automatically recognize your Windows system and find the correct driver for your video adapter. You don’t need to risk downloading the wrong Touchpad  driver.

You can download and install your drivers by using either the Free or Pro version of Driver Easy. But with the Pro version it takes only a few clicks (and you get full support and a 30-day money back guarantee):

1) Download and install Driver Easy.

2) Run Driver Easy and click the Scan Now button. Driver Easy will then scan your computer and detect any problem drivers.

3) Click the Update button next to the flagged Touchpad device name to automatically download the correct version of the driver (you can do this with the FREE version), then install it on your computer.

Or click Update All to automatically download and install the correct version of all the drivers that are missing or out of date on your system. (This requires the Pro version which comes with full support and a 30-day money back guarantee. You’ll be prompted to upgrade when you click Update All.)

4) Restart your laptop and try your Touchpad.

Note: You can also try to uninstall and reinstall the Touchpad driver with Driver Easy (Pro version required). This is useful especially when you are trying to remove any driver-related troubles and reinstall it.

If your touchpad issue persists, don’t worry. There’s something else to try.

Fix 3: Troubleshoot the hardware issue

If the touchpad on your HP laptop is still not working, you can try the troubleshooting utility in Windows to automatically fix the hardware issue detected. Follow these steps:

1) Open the Control Panel on your laptop, and click Troubleshooting.

2) Click Hardware and Sound.

3) Click Hardware and device.

4) Click Next, then wait for the troubleshooting process to finish.

5) Follow the on-screen wizard to automatically fix the detected issues.
