Fix 1: Install all Windows Updates
If your system isn’t updated regularly, there could be compatibility issues that can affect game performance and compromise your FPS. Keeping your system up-to-date can help solve or at least prevent such issues. Here’s how:
- On your keyboard, press the Windows Logo key and the I key (Win+I) to open the Windows Settings app.
- Click Windows Update on the right.
- Then click Check for updates. Windows will then check if there are any newly released updates. If so, it will automatically download and install the updates for you. It might take some time.
- You may repeat these steps until it prompts You’re up to date when you click Check for updates to make sure you have all the updates installed.
- Restart your computer when it’s done.
If this doesn’t solve your problem, try the next fix.
Fix 2: Disable overlays
Overlay is available for many programs and is quite useful, but it could cause stuttering issues sometimes. You can turn off the overlays to test if it’s the cause of your low FPS problem. Here we’ll take turning off the Steam overlay as an example:
- Launch Steam, and navigate to Settings >> In-game.
- Uncheck the box of Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
- Click OK to save the changes.
You can also disable Steam overlay per game if it doesn’t seem to cause FPS drops for your other games. Here’s how:
- In your Steam library, right-click New World and click Properties.
- Under the General tab, make sure Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game is unchecked.
Launch New World and test your FPS. If this doesn’t help, try the next fix.
Fix 3: Turn on Windows high performance mode
The default power profile of a PC is usually balanced, which means your PC tries to balance performance and energy consumption. You can set your PC to high performance mode so your PC will assign more resources to your game when it’s running. In addition, you can apply this setting to your GPU.
1: Change your PC’s power plan
2: Allow high graphics performance for the game
1: Change your PC’s power plan
- On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key and R to invoke the Run box.
- Type control panel, then click OK.
- Choose View by: Small icons, then click Power options.
- Set the power plan to High performance.
2: Allow high graphics performance for the game
- On your keyboard, press the Windows Logo key and the I key (Win+I) to open the Windows Settings app. Type display settings into the search box on the left of the window, and select Display settings.
- Scroll down and select Graphics in the Related settings section.
- Click Browse and add NewWorld.exe to the list. The default installation location should be C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common.
- Once the game executable is added, click Options.
- Select High performance, then click Save.
Remember to reboot your PC to save the changes. If this doesn’t give you a FPS boost, try the next fix.
Fix 4: Update your graphics driver
If you’ve tried the above fixes and nothing worked, you may want to check your graphics card driver. If it’s faulty or outdated, it’s very likely the cause of your low FPS and stuttering issues.
There are two ways to keep your graphics card driver up-to-date. One is to manually update it via Device Manager. If Windows doesn’t give you the latest available version, you can go to the manufacturer’s website, and search for the latest correct driver. Be sure to choose only the driver that is compatible with your Windows version.
Automatic driver update – If you don’t have the time, patience, or computer skills to update your driver manually, you can, instead, do it automatically with Driver Easy. Driver Easy will automatically recognize your system and find the correct driver for your exact graphics card and your Windows version, then it will download and install it correctly:
- Download and install Driver Easy.
- Run Driver Easy and click the Scan Now button. Driver Easy will then scan your computer and detect any problem drivers.
- Click the Update button next to the flagged graphics driver to automatically download the correct version of the driver, then you can manually install it (you can do this with the FREE version).
Or click Update All to automatically download and install the correct version of all the drivers that are missing or out of date on your system. (This requires the Pro version which comes with full support and a 30-day money-back guarantee. You’ll be prompted to upgrade when you click Update All.)
If you need assistance, please contact Driver Easy’s support team at support@drivereasy.com.
Restart your PC for the new driver to take effect. If updating the graphics driver doesn’t solve your problem, there’s one more fix you can try.
Fix 5: Adjust in-game settings
It’s recommended to lower in-game graphics settings to boost the FPS. Launch New World, and navigate to Settings >> Visuals. You can lower the Video Quality here. You can also tweak around other settings according to your PC specs to see what helps most. Some players also found that setting a FPS cap helps, so it’s definitely worth a try.
